My family is blessed in that we have a small farm in the beautiful "Piney Woods" of East Texas where we raise cattle. This is our main residence and we are there as much as we can be. We also share a home in the Dallas/FTW area with our daughter for during the work week. Our dogs all learn to be great travelers and are with us no matter if at the house in town or at the farm. I am very involved with my dogs and the Dog community in general. We attend as many Charity "Walk a Thons" in our area we can make and I try to work closely with Rescue and the Shelters in my area. At the farm we are very secluded and the dogs are able to take long walks with me, play and dig to their hearts content and we even have a pond to play in when the "Dog" days of summer hit. As you saw in the "Fun Photo's" I let the dogs be dogs and don't worry about top-knots when out having fun. We have a large fenced yard and all the dogs live in our home and too many, it seems on some nights, sleep in our bed with us.
It became important to attend shows then learn to show myself. The titles are wonderful but the most important part to me are the critiques, by qualified Judges, about the quality of dogs I have. The IABCA and NAKC have wonderful rare breed shows for this. If asked, the Judges will speak to you and give you guidelines on how to best show and will explain the structure that they look for in our breed. In the IABCA you will be given written critiques on your dog. These are an invaluable tool for making the determination if your baby is a good example of the breed for show and certainly for breeding. The NAKC is handled under the point system and is much like the AKC shows. Both of these show venues are of the highest quality and can teach you alot about your dog and how he/she stands against the standards and competes with others of the same age or rank.
My personal beliefs are that we should constantly be "Upgrading" the breed. This takes pairings of different lines and should include the use of the top dogs in the industry. It is a gradual step..but each breeding should be done with a vision of a "Betterment" to the breed, done for a reason, and not random breedings for money as the primary reason. If done for the betterment of the breed, the best of the best pups are kept in our programs. Random breedings are not usually kept. The term "Breeder" has many definations...some put two dogs together and produce a litter for sale. Other "Breeders" research the possibilities of using different sires and dams to produce a litter that has the potential to be "Better" than their parents and breed primarily for their own private programs. This is a constant search and many miles across the country to find the right one. Know and research your breeder to see which kind you want to be affiliated with.
Be sure and do your homework on this breed. There is a big responsibility to owning such a rare breed! Many of these dogs are closely related and you want to have dogs as far apart in relatives as you can. Line and Back breeding can cause many problems in ANY breed.
